St John's Wort

St John's wort is a famous green herb which can be used for medicinal purposes. The other names for the herb are Hypericum perforatum, Tipton’s Weed, Chase-devil, Rosin Rose and Klamath weed. It has got its name from John the Baptist whose birth day is celebrated on 24th June and it is on this day that this beautiful flower blooms.

There are many stories about the origin of this name and the usage of this herb which may not be true but the truth is that this herb is useful in curing many diseases.

This flower is a native of Greece but for many centuries a lot of American, Indian, European and Australian cities have been growing them for commercial purpose. It has a unique and beautiful flower. The yellow color of the flower looks bright and has 5 petals which are around 2.5 cm long. They bloom by late spring to midsummer. Leaves of this flower have some white dots on it if you see them in sunlight. The color of the leaves is yellowish green. It has a red stem. The fruit of this plant bears brown color seeds which are used for planting.

It prefers dry soil to grow. It takes 1 to 3 months to grow fully after the plantation of the seed. The temperature required is 10°c. It requires deep planting. Good sunlight is essential for this plant to grow well. It can be found on the banks and meadows.

Flower top is the most useful part of this plant and can be used in many herbal medicines. The best time to harvest this herb is during midsummer. Its extract is very useful. It is available in the tablet, capsule and tincture form. It can be taken in the form of tea and there are tea bags available in each market today. In all the herbal medicine shops, it is easily available.

St John's wort is useful for the treatment of the following:

• It can be used for curing depression as well as mental disorder and anxiety.

• Paste made from this herb can be used for wounds and treating other skin diseases.

• For sleeping disorders this can be used as a remedy.

• Arthritis, dysentery, peptic ulcers can be treated with the help of this herb.

• Bed wetting among small children can be cured with this herb.

If taken in higher dosage, it can give you tiredness, dizziness and sometimes gastric problems too. In some countries consumption and buying of St.John’s wort is allowed only when there is a doctor’s prescription given in order to avoid overdose.
