Rosemary Plants

Rosemary plants belong to mint family. Rosemary a very useful green color herb. Its needle like leaves has many medicinal values. It can grow in a garden or at home too. The scientific name for the plant is Rosmarinus Officinalis and other names are wild, marsh, Moorwort and Garden Rosemary.
Most of the time it grows near the sea, that is the reason this plant has got this name which means dews of the sea in Latin. Mostly this plant was found in Greece and Rome. It is easy to grow this herb in any climate. It requires loam soil and sun light to grow well. Alkaline conditions are best for this plant.

Height of Rosemary plants can be up to 1.5 to 2 meters. It gets flowers in the summer season and has wide variety of colors for its flowers ranging from white, pick, blue and purple. It has narrow leaves.

Instead of planting the seeds of the plant, you can plant a small branch of this herb, it can be planted in a small bowl too.

According to the Greek mythology, Goddess Aphrodite had this flower with her when she arrived from the sea. In Europe and Australia it was used for remembrance during weddings and funerals.

Leaf of this tree is the most important part of this plant. As per the research this plant is rich in iron, calcium and vitamin B6. Dried leaves of this plant has moisture, protein, fibre, Vitamin A,B and C along with sodium and potassium.

Following are the uses of this herb:

• It improves memory.

• The flowers of this plant are very attractive and can be used for decoration.

• The substance called carnosic acid which is found in rosemary can protect your brain from strokes and other brain diseases like Alzheimer.

• Oil can be prepared from the extraction of this herb which can be used as an ointment for skin rashes and hair problems.

• Handful of leaves boiled in two to three cups of water can be used for hair wash.

• Its tea can give you energy.

• Twigs can be burnt and used as air freshener for the room and it can be a good mosquito repellent.

When is systematically harvested and taken in a right proportion will not give you any side effects. For some sensitive people it might give mild rash. People who have iron deficiency should not take this herb in their diet as it creates problems with iron content of the body.
