Passion Flower Herb

Passion flower herb is known by many names like maypop herb (since it grows in May) and apricot vine. Its scientific name is “Passiflora Incarnata”. It is so named because of its resemblance to the crucifixion of the Christ.

The three stamens indicate the wounds and the twelve petals indicate the apostles of Christ. It is a beautiful flower, most of the times white and purple in color. The vines can grow up to 30 feet and bear alternate leaves. This flower has an astonishing 500 different species.

This herb can be found mainly in the United States. It needs a warm climate to grow. It is primarily found in Kentucky, Texas, Virginia, Hawaii and Florida. It also thrives in partly shaded areas, wastelands, fences and roadsides. It can also be cultivated at home. The flower needs a trellis for support and a bright light.

One thing to be remembered is to plant them indoors to protect them from snow and frost in winter. It also bears a fruit called Passion fruit which is edible. The passion fruit is yellow, purple or brown in color and is seedy. It is also very aromatic.

Passion Flower Herb

There are many medicinal benefits and uses of the Passion flower. The leaves are known to be sedative and hence used to cure sleep related problems. A decoction of the leaves and the petals can cure many a number of discomforts namely- Asthma, problems of menopause, hyperactivity and excitability in kids, treatment of nervousness, coronary diseases, insomnia, concentration ado and illnesses of the old people. It has an amazing effect on inflammations and burns. The recent studies also show that it can be used in the treatment of cancer, leukemia, HIV, Parkinson’s et al.

The flower also has its culinary uses. Parts like leaves and petals are used in preparation of delicious jams and jellies. The fruit is often used to prepare juice. It has a strong rich aroma to it and hence it is added to other juices as well. The flower is also known to have a relieving effect on back pain and epileptic problems.

However, doctors advise not to consume this plant during pregnancy. Medicinal tea can be prepared by boiling leaves and petals with water and sugar for ten minutes. With so many uses, it sure is a boon to the mankind and of great use.
