Holistic Medicine

If you have never discussed holistic medicine with a trained professional, it may come as a surprise to you to hear that it is a practice that isn't just about the body. Instead, it is far different from other forms of medicine because it takes the "whole" person into account.

This means the body, living environment, social life, spiritual beliefs, and emotional life are all part of an exam done by a professional who practices holistic medicine.

Does that mean that you won't get a diagnosis that can be addressed with something like drugs or surgery if you rely on holistic medicine? No...actually, it is quite common for a practitioner to consider all of the options and to use the one that is the right and most appropriate "fit".

This means that if the professional has looked at your entire condition and found that the only way to restore balance and well being is through a course of drugs or some sort of surgical procedure, they will feel obliged and responsible for ensuring that it happens.

This is why it is odd to hear that people view holistic treatment as an odd or unusual choice. Just consider a basic comparison between a regular physician and a holistic one. You might have a severe migraine on a frequent basis and head to a regular doctor to discuss the matter.

Holistic Medicine
That physician may go through a series of questions to ensure that the pain is not related to a serious medical condition and then give a prescription to address the pain. The holistic professional, on the other hand, would ask questions about diet, exercise, stress, emotional turmoil, the environment, and more.

What would this do? Usually, holistic professionals can uncover an underlying problem that is directly related to the development of a health condition or problem. They may still prescribe some sort of pharmaceutical compound, but this would not be their "knee jerk" reaction; instead, it is something done only after ruling out the natural or alternative options.

We just used the words “natural” and “alternative”, and you should know that holistic treatments tend to be viewed as CAM (which means complementary and alternative medicine). Though they are becoming more and more mainstream, you will still find it relatively difficult to locate a holistic practitioner in many areas of the world. They should be consulted, however, if you feel that a whole person assessment is going to give you a better diagnosis.

Holistic medicine is a branch of health care which promotes a cooperative relationship among the elements of human beings. This mutually harmonious relationship leads towards most favorable achievement of the physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual aspects of a person’s healthy well being.

How does Holistic medicine work?

A human body has inherent as well as natural healing abilities. Alternative health care solutions and holistic healing support the body in healing itself. A holistic therapy acts as a complementary as well as alternative healing method to the standardized medicine. Holistic healing techniques include alternative, natural as well as Ayurvedic health remedies, like herbal healing and a huge range of health and wellness products and services. As we all know, an ailment occurs when the balance between two systems of human body is disturbed. Holistic healing techniques apply to the complete as well as balanced approach to treat these imbalances and help a human being achieve complete harmony. It is a lifestyle approach, which looks at changing a person lifestyle, if required, to cure his ailment. The holistic techniques include Reiki, acupuncture, homeopathy, healing techniques etc, which are also simultaneously referred to as alternative medicines.

Why is it so popular?

It is popular because it resorts to alternative medicine and does not therefore fall within the realms of conventional medicine. It owes popularity because of the fact that it includes therapies which have a cultural as well as traditional origin, and have no scientific basis for the same.

A peep into a therapy session:

This type of medicine includes therapies falling under the categories of naturopathy, herbalism, chiropractic medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, meditation, Yoga, Ayurveda, hypnotherapy, homeopathy, acupuncture, nutritional based therapies as well as biofeedback.

Is it a painful therapy?

Some of the therapies falling under acupuncture may be painful, but the remaining categories of healing as well as medicine are not painful at all. In fact they are aimed at soothing all the senses of a human and provide a sense of well-being from within.

Precautions

Certain precautions need to be taken. The first one being that it should be followed the advice of an expert in the field and the regular medical physician should also be informed about the same. If dietary supplements are being adopted, their ingredients, safety, and claims, should be verified, as they have often led to a controversy. In some cases, the synthetic drugs are legal, but the herbal sources of the same are banned. Any nature of treatment as well as medicine being adopted by a patient, be it a conventional medicine or holistic medicine, has a psychological or biological impact. Therefore utmost care should be taken, before any of these are sought for.

Conclusion

It highlights the need to look at the person in totality, which includes the analysis of the values pertaining to his physical, environmental, social, and spiritual and lifestyle. This type of medicine has already worked wonders in the lives of many people and this is the reason why more individuals are opting for it.
