Green Technology

What is "green technology"? It is really anything that uses alternative energy sources or that which is not harmful to the planet as it does its work.

For example, we believe that one of the best things to come out of green technology is not the giant alternative energy plants, the alternative fuel cars, or the solar home systems - though these are fabulous things in themselves. No, what is truly remarkable is the range of consumer solutions currently available.

Green Technology
Such as? Well, consider that there are now all kinds of solar battery packs that can be used for things like laptops, GPS devices, and more. This means that people can sit outside on a sunny day and use their laptop without also having to run extension cords back into a building or to the nearest outlet.

It also means that people out camping or hiking can still rely on the wonderful technologies in their GPS or mobile devices - meaning camping and hiking are now safer than ever before. Of course, green technology also applies to all of the incredible biodegradable goods now available on supermarket shelves and in other department store settings.

For instance, each year in the United States there is a coastal cleanup initiative that also tracks the most discarded items. At the top of this depressing list is always plastic utensils, shopping bags, and food wrappers. This has all led to the development of products once made from plastic to now be made of entirely biodegradable materials, such as rice paste and paper.

We did mention the larger technologies, and we should give them a bit of attention too. For instance, it is now possible to get off of the grid without a tremendous amount of difficulty thanks to the greener technologies available. From geothermal heating and cooling systems for the home to solar panels that emulate roofing tiles and shingles, you can equip a home with a constant and relatively reliable supply of energy.

The same things can be said about vehicles too. From the latest news about battery-powered cars, to the updates in alternative or bio-fuel vehicles, it is clear that the one area in which greener technologies will benefit the most is being addressed. That area is the vast consumer market, and this means that you can easily put your dollars to work in order to support green industries, technologies and businesses in order to improve the world.

It’s no secret that more and more people are trying to “go green”, and green technology is there to help every step of the way. The ultimate idea is to create materials that can be totally reused or recycled again and again.

Instead of the “Cradle to Grave” mentality, the folks who produce green technology want a “Cradle to Cradle” mentality. That would mean nothing would be wasted and everything could be reused. Their purpose is also to reduce pollution as much as possible, making the world a simply safer place to live. Green technology priorities are things like energy and fuel sources, environmentally friendly packing sources, and also less toxic chemicals. The goal is to rely less on our natural resources and create alternatives that are in turn environmentally friendly as well as being recyclable and reusable.

The burden is too great on the limited natural resources that we have and there will come a time all too soon that they will be gone unless technology focusing on green improvements can continue to move forward and create products and materials to save those resources. Solar panels and orange cleaner are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to green living and technologies.

Latest Greentech News

To give you some idea of the strides that are being made, take a look at some of these green technologies in the news:

Samsung joins the greentech movement: Samsung has committed to continue to find more environmentally friendly tools and resources.

Campus Challenge: At Richmond College and other campuses around the country, with no on-campus transportation and little off campus transportation, several colleges have come together to find ways to reduce gas emissions from students having to drive to and through campus. They are trying to find more economical and environmentally friendly transportation.

Reducing freight costs. Most everything consumers buy has travelled about 1500 miles to get to the store from which you purchase it. Efforts are underway to create a better way to use the freight system, and to utilize local resources more to cut out virtually all transportation waste for many products.

Everyone Can Make A Difference

Finding more fuel efficient, environmentally friendly and economically sound products isn’t difficult but it does sometimes take just a little bit of searching. Green focused technology is moving forward every day and producing more products and ideas to help the earth stay green. By taking just a few extra minutes to look for the “Green” label, you could be doing yourself and the earth a huge favor.
