Ginger

Ginger is often questioned whether is it an herb or a spice. It is a multi purpose herb used in culinary and in most of herbal medicines.

This herb has been in use from olden days, to treat different medical conditions. The root is used in food to add taste and to enhance the flavor of the dish. It is a perennial herb that yields essential oil. It is a pungent, aromatic and sweet herb.

Ginger is the name originated from a Sanskrit word meaning horn shaped. The other names of this herb are Sheng Jiang and Jamaica ginger.

This herb is a native to China and India; it is available in other countries like Nigeria, Jamaica and West Indies.

This plant is cultivated in countries like Florida, Hawaii and California.

This herb has been used in almost half of the Chinese traditional herbal treatment medicines. It is used by Chinese physicians in combination with other herbs as it helps in mediating the effects of other ingredients. This herb has been used in European herbal traditional to treat stomach upset and also to stop nausea.

Ginger

It is useful to us in many ways:

• This herb helps in increasing perspiration and also helps in proper digestion.

• The functioning of the liver is properly activated by this herb.

• It helps in controlling nausea and vomiting.

• This is one of the good medicines for cough. The decoction of this root with boiling water gives a soothing effect to soar throat.

• It is highly beneficial for those who suffer from acute pain. This root stimulates circulation and relaxes spasms thus relieving pain.

• This herb can be applied externally as a remedy to rheumatism, menstrual cramps, sprains and spasmodic pain.

• This root is the best medicine for motion sickness and indigestion. When taken internally it cures nausea and morning sickness too.

• It is used to treat sever cold condition as it is a warming herb.

• Research shows that this herb possess anti inflammatory properties.

• It has beneficial effect on ulcers. It increases the secretion of bile and gastric juices. It also helps in increasing peristalsis.

• This herb or its essential oil has many medicinal properties, so it can be used to cure normal medical conditions like cold, cough, abdominal chills.

• This herb is used internally to treat peripheral circulatory problems and influenza.

The root can be used raw or it can be cooked. It is mostly used in all cuisines to enhance flavor and at the same time good for health.
