Facts about water pollution are often talked about in public and media. However, these facts only remain a piece of information and not a reason of execution.
Most of the water bodies are polluted in this day and age. A lot has been said about water pollution over the past many years. However, very little has been done in order to reduce or stop this type of pollution.
A lot of research has already been done regarding water pollution. However, there are many facts which most of the people are not aware of.
Salt water cannot be consumed
Many of you might find this fact extremely silly as this is something which you already know. What matters here is that if we cannot consume more salt water than what have we left with to drink? Yes, doesn’t it sound alarming? You must have studied that 97% of the total water bodies are the oceans. Well, if this is indeed the scenario than 97% of the total water on earth is of no use to human consumption.
Water based pollutants cause only 20% of the total water contamination
Point source pollution which is popularly referred to as water contamination takes place when waste is directly discharged into a water body. The BP oil spill which took place in the gulf of Mexico is the most recent of this kind. Many environmental organizations and other International bodies are working hard towards reducing water based pollution. However, the fact of the matter is that this type of pollution is only responsible for 20% of the total water contamination.
Land based pollutants cause 80% contamination
Human sewage, litter, raw waste and fertilizers cause as much as 80% water contamination. Unfortunately, these issues have been termed as ‘minor’ by many reputed organizations while the rest have been termed as ‘global environmental issues’ and hence very little have been done in this respect.
Care about your own health if not the environment
This is one of the most important facts about water pollution. We understand that not all humans have a soft corner for environment. However, you can contribute little by atleast caring for your own health. Water pollution is one of the main reasons behind a number of diseases and health disorders. Diarrhea, which is one of the deadly diseases courtesy water pollution, kills as many as 1.5 million people across the globe every year.
Unfortunately, not much attention has been paid towards these facts about water pollution. If this trend continues we would soon regret our negligence.
