Eucalyptus Plant

Eucalyptus plant is a tall tree with slender leaves spreading a pleasant smell around the place where it grows. This tree grows to a great height and is seen in hill stations and in places where water is available in plenty. This tree needs a lot of water to grow. This is a tall evergreen tree and the height reaches more than 275 feet. The adult leaves are 6-12 inches long and up to 2 inches broad.

This has other names like Nilgiri taila, tailapatra, tailaprana and sugandhapatra. It is the blue gum or Australian fever tree, which is often used for medicines.

The other species of this tree are abdita, acies, apiculata, albopurpurea, amplifolia, andrewsii and ammophila all having the prefix eucalyptus. There are altogether 700 varieties of this herb.

They are grown in Australia, Spain, Morocco, and many parts of India. They need fertile, drained soil with enough moisture. It can be grown with seeds, semi hard woodcuttings, soft woodcuttings and sandy soil. It requires lot of sunlight and water before and post planting.

Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus oil consists of volatile oil, which is distilled from the leaves and the top of the branches of this plant. It is a rich source of the antiseptic substance cineole that is also referred to as eucalyptol.

This herb is used for many purposes:

• Its main use is in the form of oil or leaf tea. This has the ability to ease breathing and relieve congestion in colds. Its oil can be used for relieving sore and extended muscles.

• The oil of this herb is a potent antiseptic, which helps in destroying fungi and bacteria.

• This helps in improving cardiac action.

• This is administered in all kinds of fever.

• This helps in purifying the blood and lowers the blood sugar level in the body. This also helps in good blood circulation in the body.

• This helps also in relieving asthma and bronchitis.

• Traditionally, this herb has been used to treat diabetes, which has benefited the patient very well. But more research needs to be done in this area to know the extent of the usage in a diabetic.

• Fresh leaves of this tree are used to make tea and to soothe sore throats and also to treat sinusitis and bronchitis.• The oil is also used to rub on the skin as an insect repellent.

• In many cases it has been used to revive people from fainting spells due to the strong aroma.

• It is also used to treat bad breath.

This is not only used for human anatomy but also for many other purposes. They are used as disinfectants and a drop when added along with water removes all the germs when cleaning floors, bathrooms and any other surface.
