Essential Oils

Essential oils are those aromatic oils that we commonly use in the bath. They come in many flavors such as peppermint, lavender and eucalyptus.

These oils are made directly from the root source of the plants mentioned above and are distilled so that their essence can be captured. They are extremely popular today with cosmetic beauty treatments skyrocketing.

It’s all about clever marketing and the brand you use. These are most often used in baths to allow a relaxing ambience to be created. Also used for body massages and scented candles.

Aromatherapy uses these oils widely. They are thought to contain natural healing properties which saturate into the body and calm the nerves. Many firm believers of this treatment constantly use oils in their daily lives, anything from relieving muscle tension to enhancing the libido. Some even believe that these oils contain anti septic properties so they have healing properties as well. Head massages are a big rave as the smell or aroma of these oils is thought to be neurologically soothing. So if you’ve got a headache, a nice head massage with one of these oils can do the trick.

The art lies all in the hands of the masseuse. However, because of the intense concentration of some of these herbs or plants, they are not applied to the skin directly. A hot water tub filled with lukewarm water is used to as an agent to reduce the powerfulness of these oils. It acts like a mild solvent and allows the user to obtain the full pleasures of these oils without incurring any severe reaction. If applied directly to the skin it can cause irritation, allergic reactions, or even prove to be toxic for the body overtime.

Essential oils are therefore generally sold in their diluted forms. Its effect on pregnant women has not been tested enough so there is not enough evidence to show whether they are harmful for the body or not. Unknown to most, these oils are used in household cleaning products, soaps, perfumes and of course scenting incense. Since the uses are so varied, it makes sense to be careful while handling course oils. Distillation is a process that takes up to 22 hours to complete and if not done properly has to be repeated all over again. Therefore it is advisable that this process not be attempted at home.
