Emollient

An emollient is a skin softening agent is usually included in hand and foot creams and other beauty products that involve skin care and softening.

They are also more commonly known as moisturizers. They are usually applied to the skin when the skin becomes dry and itchy. They usually are oil or mineral derivatives such as mineral oil or lanolin. They work because of their oily nature. When applied to the skin, they form an oily layer on top of the skin thus helping the skin retain moisture.

This helps in lubrication of the skin and hence the skin softens. This kind of mechanism is known as Occlusion. They can also work by adding water to the skin. Such a type of agent is called as a Humectant. They increase the capacity of the stratum corneum to hold water. The last kind of mechanism is by way of lubrication.

The most common emollients that are used include aloe Vera, jojoba oil and Vitamin A. Aloe juice has been used since a long time for its various skin softening properties. The juice from the aloe plant is used in order to keep the skin moist and prevent it from drying up completely. It keeps the skin hydrated and hence smooth and soft. Jojoba oil is also used as a skin softener by many people.

These have also been used widely in order to treat all sorts of skin infections for burn victims. One such example is that of Vitamin A. It is known to keep the skin healthy and also hydrated at all times. Moisturisers are usually applied by people only in the winters are they believe that it is in this weather that the skin dries out.

But this is not however the case all the time. There are many who suffer from dry skin no matter that the weather is. It is important for such people to constantly keep their skin hydrated and hence healthy. In addition to providing hydration for the skin, these moisturisers help in supplying essential nutrients to the skin.

These nutrients include Vitamin A and potassium, both of which are extremely important in keeping the skin healthy and moist all the time. Anti oxidant properties are also important as they prevent the skin from getting wrinkles and hence ageing. This helps keep the skin clear and pimple free and at the same time looking young.
