Snoring is caused either by poor sleeping posture or irregularity in the soft tissues of your throat. If there is any obstruction in your nasal passage, you cannot breathe in a normal manner. Allergies, sinus problems and selling of the turbinates can block the nasal passage and thereby cause snoring.

Sometimes, overuse of nasal sprays may irritate your nasal passage and cause snoring. Tonsils, goiter and obesity can contribute to snoring to a great extent. Aging is another factor that causes snoring. As you age, your throat becomes narrower and this creates the noise of snoring.

It is therefore important to understand the causes and cures for snoring.

• The best possible way to cure snoring is to lose excessive weight. Weight loss can help reduce the fatty tissue at the back of your throat which in turn reduces snoring.

• Sleeping on the back may cause mild snoring and this can be corrected by sleeping on your side.

• Using the right pillow can also help reduce snoring. The airway becomes restricted, if your neck is at an incline. You can use a pillow that keeps your head level and spine aligned with your body.

• Alcohol consumption is known to cause snoring.

Sleeping pills may help you with sound sleep, but it triggers snoring. You can limit the use of sleeping pills or go to bed a little earlier to avoid this problem.

• High fat dairy products can cause mucus build up in the throat, which in turn can cause snoring. You must avoid eating such foods, especially before going to bed.

• If you have a stuffy nose, you can use nasal strips that will help you breathe easily.

• Smoking can increase nasal congestion and mucus build up in the throat. If you find it difficult to breathe through the nose, you tend to breathe through your mouth, which in turn cause snoring.

• Throat dryness can cause snoring too. It is a good idea to moisturize your mouth before going to bed.

• You can do certain simple exercises to stop snoring. For instance, you can close your mouth and move it as if you are chewing gum for a few minutes. You can also try making an “mmm” sound while chewing. This helps open up your airways.
