Biofeedback Techniques

Biofeedback techniques can effectively train people to improve their health by having command over distinct bodily processes that usually happen on their own, for example blood pressure, skin temperature and muscle tension. Electrodes when pinned to your skin; gauge these processes and show them on the monitor.
With the assistance of therapist, you can gain knowledge about how to change your blood pressure or heart rate. Initially you would require the monitor to see your progress. However, in due course of time you will develop the skills to achieve control without using the electrodes or monitor. This is a useful therapy which is widely used for many cases. However it is mainly used in the treatment of headache from mild to migraine, high blood pressure, urinary incontinence and chronic pain.

Types:

There are three forms of this widely used therapy:

• Thermal biofeedback techniques are used to measure temperature of skin.

• Electroencephalography (EEG), which is used to measure brain wave activity.

• Electromyography (EMG), which is used measures muscle tension.

How this therapy works

Researchers aren’t certain about why or how this therapy functions. However there is a single thread which is common. Most of the people who recover with the assistance of this process were seem to be having conditions which only get worse due to stress. For such cases scientists consider relaxation as the best way to achieve success in this therapy. When the person’s body is in under chronic stress, internal processes such as blood pressure become highly active. After getting help from a therapist, one can surely learn to decrease blood pressure by implementing practice of mental exercises and relaxation techniques. When an individual executed these exercises in the right manner, desired results reflect on the monitor which supports the efforts.

Therapy session

In an ordinary session, electrodes are inserted in your skin through which information is sent to a little monitoring box that converts the measurement into a tone which varies in pitch, which is generally a visual meter that varies in intensity or a computer screen that shows lines traveling across a grid. After that the therapist gives some mental exercise to you.

By doing some hit and trial method, you can learn to recognize the mental activities which will help to bring about some physical changes as desired by you.

Usage

This therapy is the most effective solution for a wide range of health problems. It has proved effective against urinary incontinence, which remains a huge problem for more than 15 million Americans. It is considered as one of the best options against drugs and medicines due to the lack of side effects which are found commonly after the usage of medication. According to the findings in clinical studies, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research has suggested biofeedback therapy as the most convenient treatment for urinary incontinence. It is also effective against fecal incontinence and help people recover faster.Research also depicts that Thermal biofeedback may reduce symptoms of Reynaud’s disease which is nothing but a condition that erupts due to reduction in the amount of blood flow to toes, nose, ears or fingers.
