Astringent

Astringents are substances which cause on application cause contraction of skin. The chemical compounds present in the substance cause the body tissues to contract. These substances maybe used for medicinal purpose or for cosmetic purpose and is available locally with chemists.
These medicines are used widely to shrink the mucous membrane or any exposed tissues. Internally, when applied, it can help to check blood serum discharge and secretions of the mucous in case of sore throat, diarrhea and hemorrhages. When applied externally, it can help to coagulate skin proteins, harden it and hence protect the skin. Skin irritations caused due to insect bite or fungal infection, allergies, stretch marks and other scars too can be cured by application of this substance. Witch hazel and Calamine lotion are some of the examples of such externally used substances.

Some of these commonly found substances include oatmeal, alum, tannic acid, distilled vinegar, bayberry, acacia, sage etc. All of these substances posses astringent properties and can be used for the same.

For cosmetic purposes, they play a vital role as they are used to tone down the skin and make it firm. The substance used causes the pores to contract and a layer of firm tissue is created beneath the skin. A cosmetic substance is also known as a toner and is applied right after a bath and before application of a moisturizer.

An effective skin toner should be able to keep the surface oil in check and improve circulation in the tissues which results in a tight and firm skin. Toner also helps to remove traces of left over makeup hence opening up the pores for the moisturizer to act. There are different kinds of toner available in the market depending upon the skin type.

These substances have many benefits for your skin as it soothes irritated skin, removes excess oil, it tightens and firms the skin hence reducing wrinkles, along with firming the skin it also firms the tissues and prevents sagging, prevents the appearance of blackheads and blemishes. Hence it is important to use a good toner on the skin as it benefits the skin greatly.

Before application, it is important to wash and clean the face thoroughly. Face should be washed with a mild cleanser rather than using a harsh soap. Once washed and dried, application of toner on the skin should be made with a light hand consisting of gentle strokes on the face. One the substance dries off, moisturizer should be applied.
